Commercial Music Ensembles
Unlike most college programs where students rehearse for months and get to give just one or two performances, our pro-style groups give students real-world performing experience on the road and in the studio, giving dozens of performances each semester on campus, in the community, and on the road. These select small groups are chosen by audition at the beginning of each academic year, and are uniquely designed around the specific talents of members. Each group develops its own unique sound, style and repertoire, with group members collaborating on song selection and musical arrangements, and led or facilitated by a professional director/producer.
Up in the Air specializes in popular a cappella music, vocal jazz, and contemporary vocal harmony. With complex arrangements, Up in the Air was TU's flagship touring ensemble, established in 1996, and was among the first collegiate ensembles in the nation singing one-on-a-mic and one-on-a-part with vocal bass and beatboxing/vocal percussion.
DFX is a progressive fusion group featuring lead vocals, horns, and rhythm section. The group focuses on an eclectic mix of jazz, funk, and rock. Higher Ground is an all-female group that performs all original arrangements of pop, r&b, jazz, worldbeat, and other musical styles. Established in 1997, Higher Ground has been at the cutting-edge of a cappella music for a decade and a half. The group receives rave reviews for its dynamic vocals and unique adaptations of current popular songs. Higher Ground performs 50+ shows each year, and has toured extensively around the country.
MODE III is TU's most experimental touring group, operating at the cutting edge of commercial music, fusing r&b, hip hop, funk, soul and electronica into a creative and exciting sound that is equally entertaining live or in the studio. mode III tours around the region, appearing at schools, music festivals, clubs and other live music venues.
